Hazel Park Councilperson Disqualified in Re-Election Attempt
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 10, 2019)
Hazel Park, MI – Hazel Park Councilperson Bethany Holland’s name has been removed from the Nov. 5, 2019 ballot.
On Aug. 8 Elections Director Joe Rozzell notified the city that Holland had used an incorrect form.  “I just wanted to make you aware of the attached affidavit.  This candidate used the incorrect affidavit and therefor should not be certified to your local election commission as a candidate. Ultimately, because it’s a city office, it’s your decision on how to proceed.  Please let us know so we can update our candidate list,” the email said.
Holland’s name was crossed out and marked as “disqualified” on the Oakland County Clerk’s website Friday.  Holland said Saturday that she had not been informed of the disqualification and that she would respond next week after having a chance to talk to elections officials.
There are two seats up for election.  Incumbent Andy LeCureaux is on the ballot as well as Charles Gladue and Mike McFall.
If she, or any other interested parties, were to run as a write-in candidate, they would need to register by Oct. 25, which is the second Friday before the election.
Holland was appointed to City Council in January of 2017 after Mayor Jan Parisi resigned and Jeffrey Keeton became Mayor. She successfully ran to retain her seat in 2017.
UPDATE: Oakland County Times obtained the affidavits of each candidate in the Hazel Park election, and found that Holland’s form was different than the others.  Holland was asked how she came to use the wrong form, but declined to comment.  We are happy to add Holland’s remarks if/when she is ready to comment.
