Downtown Berkley Seeking Muralist, $7,500 Stipend Available

Berkley, MI- The Berkley Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is seeking submissions from Metro-Detroit muralists and/or designers for the design and creation of an outdoor mural welcoming residents and visitors to Downtown Berkley.
The mural will be painted on the east wall of Tootie and Tallulah’s located at 2600 Twelve Mile Rd, Berkley, MI 48072. The wall is solid brick and measures 58’ x 16’.
The scheduled deadline for completion of the mural is October 19, 2019. Applications will be reviewed, and final approval given, by the Berkley DDA’s Public Art committee and the property/business owner.
APPLICANTS ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT A RESUME, STATEMENT OF INTEREST AND WORK SAMPLES.
The DDA’s Public Art Committee will select 2-3 finalists. Upon selection of the finalists, a meeting will be arranged to further discuss concepts and content. The winning muralist or team of artists will be awarded a stipend of $7,500 upon completion of the mural. Muralist must supply own paint and any supplies. A scissors lift will be supplied by the DDA.

Creative Summary:
Should be reflective of Downtown Berkley’s retro cool, welcoming nature
Should include the words “Welcome to Downtown Berkley”
Should mimic a ghost sign or similar artistic approach (see examples below)
Colors should be tonal, not bright
Design must allow for the brick to show through in areas of the design
Emphasis on high quality design
Content appropriate for all audiences
Artist Eligibility:
Artistic excellence and prior experience creating murals that reflect a similar approach to the ghost mural examples (sample images must be submitted)
Must be 18 years of age or older
Prior experience and demonstrated technical ability to complete a mural on a unique brick surface
Muralist must be willing/able to work in public in proximity to traffic
Artist Responsibilities:
Executed work must be true to the submitted concept design, stay within the project budget, and be completed in a timely fashion
Artist must supply paint, brushes or rollers needed for the project
The artist agrees that the commissioned work is a work for hire and that the DDA is the author for purposes of copyright ownership; and that the artist assigns all rights in the art, including copyrights, if any, so that the public can fully benefit from the art
Timeline:
July 31, 2019: Issue Call for artist, designer, or a combination thereof
August 21, 2019: Deadline for applications
Sept 4, 2019: 2-3 Finalists will be notified
September 11 -17, 2019: Finalists may discuss design concepts and meet with committee members
Sept 18, 2019: Deadline for final proposals
Sept 25, 2019: Selection announced; artist receives and signs Work for Hire agreement
October 7 – 19, 2019: (flexible) Work on mural commences and is completed

Artist Statement of Interest, limit to one page, explaining how you would approach this project and describing relevant experience that would contribute to your success in completing this project
Images or link to previous work samples (up to 5) – Must include previous mural work
Image list (titles, mediums, sizes, years, locations)
Finalists’ Submission of Design Proposals (3 finalists):
One-page narrative describing the concept of the proposed mural
Sketches or other visual renderings of the proposed concept (up to 4)
All submissions must be submitted digitally to the email listed below
