Paul Wells Sworn in as Birmingham Fire Chief
(C. Proxmire, Aug. 6, 2019)
Birmingham, MI – After 21 years in the Birmingham Fire Department, Paul Wells was sworn in as Police Chief Monday.  He was hired by the city in Aug. 1998 as an Emergency Medical Technician/Firefighter.  He has served the citizens of Birmingham as an EMS Coordinator, Lieutenant/Paramedic, Captain, Assistant Fire Chief, Interim Fire Chief and now as Chief.
He has been credited as starting Birmingham Fire Department’s Advanced Life Support transporting which provides top notch Advanced Life Support services to the citizens of Birmingham.
According to the City, “A couple of years ago, he and Assistant Chief Matt Bartalino were on shift together and performed a cardiac defibrillation that saved a gentleman in his 40’s who had a young family. The man and his family stopped by the department’s annual fire open last fall and shared their gratitude with many of the firefighters.”
In his recommendation letter to the Commission, City Manager Joe Valentine  shared a number of Wells’ accomplishments including preparing the department’s budget request, and helping orientate new firefighters.
Wells had been serving as Interim Fire Chief following former Chief John Donohue’s retirement on Dec. 28, 2018.
