Every Ferndale Race Has Competition on Nov. 5 Election
(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 24, 2019)
Ferndale, MI- No seat will be a sure win on Nov. 5 as each position for elected office in the City of Ferndale has more than one candidate.
The filing deadline was July 23. Though the official candidate list has not yet been posted by Oakland County, the list of certified candidates for Ferndale is complete according to the Deputy City Clerk.
Former Councilperson Melanie Piana is running for Mayor, as is Brian Stawowy.
There are two seats for City Council with a full four-year term. Candidates for that race are Ben Buttolph, Nada Daher, Augusto Flores, Kat Bruner James, and incumbent Councilperson Raylon Leaks-May.
There is also a two year term City Council seat that was vacated by Melanie Piana, who had to resign in order to run for Mayor due to the rules of the City Charter. Rolanda Kelley, Laura Mikulski, Maryanne Wessels, and Dennis G. Whitttie are vying for that position.
Ferndale City Council is currently accepting applications to fill Piana’s seat temporarily until the end of this year. Applications for that are accepted until 4pm on July 29. The application form and instructions are found on the City of Ferndale website.
Oakland County Times is inviting all candidates to do a short video interview. Invitations will go out to the newest candidates county-wide in a couple of days when the list is more complete. Or candidates may reach out at editor@oc115.com.
Completed interviews can be viewed on our 2019 Election Page. This will continue to grow as the election nears.
