Reporter Food: Detroit Taco Company
(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 3, 2019)
Troy, MI- Troy, Royal Oak, MI- A simple idea made for a nice lunch when I tried The Detroit Taco Company for the first time recently.
There are two locations for this locally-owned chain – Royal Oak and Troy, plus locations in the works in Shelby Township and Detroit.
Guests order at a counter where they chose the pieces that work for them.
Step one is to pick a “fiesta style.” There are nachos, quesadillas, salad, burritos, bowls, and of course tacos (hard or soft). Step two is to pick the type of beans (black or pinto), and the type of rice (Mexican or white). Step three is to pick a filing. There are many choices including steak, fish, shrimp, veggies and chicken. Step four is a choice between warm queso or shredded muenster cheese. Step five offers customers a variety of topping options like salsa, lettuce, and sour cream. Step six is for the extras like guacamole, extra cheese, extra veggies, or extra meat.
I opted for the bbq pulled pork taco which had a sweet flavor to it. I also got a side of rice and beans. These lightly seasoned options were a natural pairing with the tacos. I tried one in a crispy corn shell, and one in a flour tortilla. It would be hard to pick a favorite, so why not go for variety?
My visit was to the Troy location, a surprisingly nondescript building on the outside, but with colorful murals and a cool upstairs seating area.
The Troy location is at 2199 Crooks, while the Royal Oak spot is at 304 N. Main Street. Learn more about Detroit Taco at http://www.detroittaco.com.
