Reporter Food: Hilton Road Cafe in Ferndale

Ferndale, MI – Over the past few weeks, Hilton Road Cafe (3150 Hilton Rd, Ferndale) has become a favorite breakfast/work spot for a very simple reason – great breakfast basics but with high quality, fresh ingredients.  There is nothing like fresh vegetables mixed into a breakfast wrap or omelet, or the taste of freshly baked sweet breads. And Hilton Road Cafe has mastered these things and more.
I like to go with my friend Julia Music, who runs Ferndale Pride.  Here we can sit at one of the booths where we master the art of juggling conversation with hectic work and feel good about making time for a meal.
For our first visit I decided to try the Buffalo Breakfast, because I’d never had buffalo meat before. This mammoth meal comes with crispy, perfect hash browns, three eggs, and a 1/3 lb. buffalo patty.  Buffalo (bison) has a really interesting taste, less greasy than regular ground beef and a taste that seems less processed.  Online others have described it as sweeter and lighter. And it is lower in fat, calories, and cholesterol than than typical cow.
For another visit I got a Veggie Burrito which was a tortilla filled with eggs, Swiss cheese, broccoli, mushrooms, onions and green pepper. Normally there is spinach too, but this time they were out. I was very impressed with the hearty fresh veggies and the balance of flavors.
Another great choice was the Green Omelete which has the same ingredients as the burrito, sans tortilla, but served with hash browns and bread.  Each morning the owner Effie and her staff fresh bake little sweet bread loaves.  One visit I had the blueberry, and another I had pumpkin.
Hilton Road Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch, with a variety of sandwich options including the tuna melt, Clinton’s Reuben, Gyro sandwich, chicken bacon melt, grilled ham and cheese and more.
The cafe is small, with just a few booths and a row of counter seats.  The atmosphere is cozy, with interesting things to see no matter which way you turn.   They are located at 3150 Hilton Rd, Ferndale, MI 48220 and can be found on Facebook.
