Reporter Food: Apple Fritter Donut Shop
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 29, 2019)
Ferndale, MI – When I was a little girl, my dad and I would walk up Hilton to sit at the counter of the Apple Fritter Donut Shop. Back then it was one of those places where folks would sit around talking about local politics and gossip. My dad would have a coffee and chat, while I’d thumb through the newspapers that were always well-read on the countertop, listening to the grown-ups talk, and enjoying a sweet treat.
Back then it was Bavarian Creme or French Crullers that would spark my childish imagination, as I believed those to be worldly delicacies.
I don’t indulge in donuts often, but it was nice to take a trip back in time for a moment of tasting memories.
Standing in front of displays featuring dozens of choices was a little overwhelming. There are classic donuts like powdered sugar, jelly, nutty, glazed, and old fashioned cake. Plus there are specials like Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. AND there are fritters – like apple and cherry. AND there are muffins. AND turnovers. AND danishes. Plus scones, cookies, and cinnamon rolls.
In the midst of all the sweets, I picked the simple joy of a cherry chip donut, plus the more complex presentation of the toasted coconut chocolate donut that was drizzled with just a little chocolate as well. Normally I’m not a chocolate fan, but there is something amazing about the greasy soft goodness of Apple Fritter’s chocolate cake, which is perfectly crispy in just the right proportions due to the frying process.
Decades after my childhood visits, Apple Fritter is still owned by Steve Urban, whose family helps out as well. In a four square mile city, there are two chain donut shops (including the recently re-opened Tim Horton’s), plus several places to get donuts along with groceries, meals, or gas. And still the classic Apple Fritter shop continues to be packed with hungry customers.
Check out Apple Fritter at 741 E 9 Mile Rd, Ferndale, MI 48220. They don’t have a website, but there is a Fritterman Facebook Page.
