Reporter Food: Baseline Deluxe at Bunkhouse Burgers
(Crystal A. Proxmire, April 27, 2019)
Clarkston, MI- So there’s this little place in Clarkston that only has four tables and menu with only a few items, but is rich with character and gluttonous food.
Bunkhouse Burgers is located at 5890 S Main Street in Clarkston. That location puts them between Dixie Hwy and the busy downtown, with the advantage of ample parking for dine-in and take-out guests. It’s also easy to spot the faded aqua-colored vintage Winnegago out front.
Inside, the ceiling of Bunkhouse is wallpapered with red plaid and framed with a retro lodge-style duck pattern. The light fixtures inside and out were all impressive. And on the wall near the register is a bright orange-framed screen that on this day played a loop of various people in a plain setting simply eating.
The menu is simple. Essentially it’s burgers, fries, and shakes. There is a chicken sandwich and a vegan burger, and soda pop available. At the recommendation of the man behind the counter, I had the deluxe burger which is made with beef, grilled onion, American cheese, pickle, lettuce, tomato and Winnebago sauce. I recommend lots of napkins with this one, because it’s the kind of burger that has grease running down your wrists when you hold it.
I also had the strawberry shake, topped with whipped cream and garnished with a tiny “burger” made of cookies for buns and a chocolate patty. Plus sprinkles. It was definitely the prettiest shake I’ve ever had. Tasted great too.
Bunkhouse is part of the Union Joints family of restaurants which includes Clarkston Union, Vinsetta Garage, Honcho and others. Learn more at www.clarkstonunion.com.
