Ferndale to Plant Over 300 Trees
(City of Ferndale, April 26, 2019)
Ferndale, MI- With the arrival of spring, the City of Ferndale is excited about multiple tree planting opportunities taking place in the community.
The City has been designated a Tree City USA community for over 15 years and takes pride in maintaining a healthy urban forest with the goal of achieving a 40% urban canopy cover for the City.
“Trees provide a variety of community benefits including shade, carbon dioxide sequestration, and stormwater mitigation. Our current public tree canopy—trees planted in our parks and right of ways—provide almost a million dollars of ecosystem benefits.” said Erin Quetell, Environmental Sustainability Planner for the City of Ferndale.
In a continual effort to move closer towards the 40% urban canopy cover goal, the City has partnered with the Social Forestry Project and received funding from the Community Development Block Grant to offer unique programs that will bring over 300 trees to Ferndale this season.
Arbor Day Training and Tree Planting
On Saturday, April 27, the City of Ferndale Parks and Recreation and The Social Forestry Project will present a free Arbor Day Tree Planting Training at the Gerry Kulick Community Center starting at 10 A.M. The event will engage residents in planting, tree keeping, and volunteer management in hopes to encourage more citizen forestry stewardship and participation in future CDBG Wanda Neighborhood tree planting events.
Throughout the spring there will be 260 trees planted in the Wanda neighborhood (this includes all streets between Wanda and West End between 9 Mile and 8 Mile), all funded through US HUD funding and the CDBG program.
Trees not planted during the Arbor Day events will be planted during two volunteer events—Clean the Ferndale Up on Saturday, May 18, and an additional event to take place at the end of May. The Department of Public Works will also be assisting with tree planting.

Residential Tree Program
Ferndale residents and business owners have the opportunity to purchase tress to be planted in the public right of way, between the sidewalks and the street, through the City’s tree purchasing program. This year, 81 residents requested trees to be planted—all of which will be sourced from licensed nurseries and come with a one-year warranty.
Trees will come with a street tree care brochure which will be left at every planting site to explain general watering and mulching guidelines to help grow healthy trees. Tree guards with printed care instructions will also be placed around the trees to protect the trunk.
While the deadline to purchase a tree this year has passed, you can find information to purchase a tree in the future here. Orders must be placed by January 31 prior to planting season.
