Reporter Food: Chicken Taco Platter at Mex
(Crystal A. Proxmire, March 23, 2019)
Bloomfield Hills, MI – As I’ve been exploring the restaurants of Oakland County, I find that I am just as much amazed by the flavors of the decor and atmosphere as I am with the food. A recent lunch meeting at Mex (6675 Telegraph Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI) gave me plenty of things to feast my eyes on while munching on house-made tortilla chips and waiting for tacos to arrive.
When I was in elementary school gym class, there was this thick braided rope that hung from the ceiling and we’d take turns climbing to the top. Similar long, thick ropes flow from the ceiling to the amazing chandelier made of dozens of bulbs hanging down. There’s also a walkway lined on one side by ropes, with a rich pink wall spotted with gold-framed mirrors on the opposite. In one part of the bright, open dining room, a large round table was nearly enclosed with a gold-seated booth sectioned off by a canopy of the same decorative ropes.
One wall has a mural of a woman, painted on tin cans. Another has the outline of a sugar skull. One table has a silver-colored throne at it’s head.
The care that went into the design details, was also taken by Chef Zack Sklar in creating meals that delight both visually and with flavor.
My lunch companion had a burrito, which came artfully drizzled with sour cream and little shreds of lettuce and dices of tomato sprinkled over top like confetti, with a blue-beaded pick stuck in for a final touch, along with a fancy little cup for the chili sauce.
I had the chicken tacos with cilantro lime rice and beans. The tacos came on soft corn shells, topped with pollo asado, smoky pimento cheese, radish, onion, and cilantro. This looked and tasted great. I enjoyed the Sprecher Root Beer in a bottle too.
Mex is part of the Peas and Carrots family of restaurants which includes Social in Birmingham, as well Como’s in Ferndale which is currently under renovation. Learn more about Mex at http://mex-restaurants.com/.
