Auburn Hills Fire Started in Outside Storage Area of Plastics Factory
(Christian Miller, Feb. 26, 2019)
Auburn Hills, Mich. — Drivers along I-75 and University Drive were greeted with the unnerving sight of dark, billowing smoke today.
The tower of soot originated from the US Farathane facility at 2700 High Meadow Circle. The company is a major supplier of plastics for the automotive industry.
The fire, which started before 11 a.m., engulfed scores of plastic pallets stored on the South side of the plant.
Despite flames shooting 35-40 feet in the air, the facility was spared of any damage.
Police closed road entrances to the plant as several firetrucks and scores of personnel from Auburn Hills, Rochester, Waterford and Troy battled the blaze.
Authorities are reporting no injuries at this time.
Noah Lucido, 22, was working inside the plant when the flames flew.
“The fire marshal came over the radio and said that the whole plant needed to be evacuated now,” Lucido said. “All I grabbed was my coat and my keys.”
Workers sought shelter in the auditorium of the Brose building across the street.
“I’m just glad everyone got out safe,” Lucido said. “We can always replace bins, not lives.”
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
