Reporter Food: Smoked Turkey Sandwich at The Root

White Lake, MI- The Root in White Lake came highly recommended, and reading about the restaurant’s nine year tradition of seasonal, local foods prepared by talented chefs, I can see why.  The restaurant was sold in 2018, though it carries on the same pride in preparing food that is good for their customers.

I stopped in for lunch on a snowy day, which gave me room to get some work done at the bar. There is nothing like sitting at a normally busy bar in the quiet of afternoon, jotting down the outline of a story, and sipping on a cocktail that sounds like it was made for just the occasion.

The “Last Word” is made with Valentine Liberator Gin, Green Chartreuse, Luxardo Maraschino, and lime.  The tart and delicious concoction went well with my wintertime meal – the Smoked Turkey Sandwich.

This is made with Cherry Mostarda, White Cheddar, Arugula, and Shallot Aioli on a baguette.  It came with french fries coated with seasoning.

I also had a cup of Sweet Potato Soup made with coconut milk, spiced pecans, and a hot Tunisian chili pepper paste called Harissa. The strength of the flavors of each item, and the way they contrasted, made every bite seem fresh and new to my taste-buds.

The restaurant is beautiful, with tress (and their roots) being the theme.  At the front is a communal table with a centerpiece paying homage to the little details of nature.
