Holiday Light Awards Given by Ferndale Beautification Commission
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Dec. 27, 2018)
Ferndale, MI – The Ferndale Beautification Commission has announced the winners of the holiday light contest.  One home from each quadrant of the city was selected, plus Fern and Dale’s Salon at 23344 Woodward was also honored as the business winner.
“There were so many beautiful lights this year,” said Suzanne Janik of the Ferndale Beautification Commission.  She and other commission members rode around the city for over an hour and a half checking out all 22 nominations.  “The judging is always a great time seeing all the pride and effort that Ferndale puts into their properties!”
Robbin Yelverton was also one of the judges.  “I personally think that the presence of holiday lights in the community reminds us on these dark dreary days of winter, that there are still those that wish to brighten the spirits of those around them,” Yelverton said.  “It may be too cold to get out and garden bringing beauty to our neighborhoods, but the lights illuminate the darkness to bring cheer and color to those that pass by.”
479 W. Oakridge won for the NW quadrant.  According to the commission, “This house was amazing and won over the judges’ hearts.”  It featured a traditional evergreen with rainbow lights and a star, plus red lights on the trees, gold lights on the bushes, and a ring of lights for the entrance way.
931 Allen was the choice for SW.  Decked in all red, “this monochromatic display lines the architectural details of this house and the walk is lined with candy canes.”  An inflated Homer Simpson wearing a Santa Claus costume added a festive touch.
3239 Horton shines in the NE corner of town.  This adorable white house is accented with holiday lights, plus a variety of illuminated animals making the yard a playful display to spread Christmas cheer.
316 Ardmore  was the winner for the SE quadrant. This home sparkled with lights lining the roof, covering the bushes and shining in the tree along with candy cane swirls. There were also lighted deer.
The Ferndale Beautification Commission will present the property owners with certificates at the next City Council meeting, and each home has a lawn sign celebrating their award.  The FBC also hosts a contests for Halloween decorations and Beautification Awards in the warmer months.  Learn more about Ferndale Beautification Commission on Facebook.
