Explore: Detroit Model Railroad Club in Downtown Holly
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Dec. 25, 2018)
Holly, MI – Inside a former movie theater in Downtown Holly is home to Michigan’s largest O Scale Model Railroad. The Detroit Model Railroad Club
Club members are constantly adding on to the miniature world – with two floors of hand-laid railroad tracks, mountains, rivers, valleys, and several small cities. There are over 6,000 feet of track on the main level of the club – which would be the equivalent of 57 miles in O Scale.
Remote controls and radios are used to coordinate the trains’ paths. In the observation room above “The Detroit Union Railroad,” a dispatcher monitors each train and line just as a dispatcher would for a life-sized rail system.
Members come for weekly work days, and on certain weekends there are open houses for the public. The club began in 1935 and moved into the old Holly Theatre in 1974. Memberships are available, and the group sells calendars featuring scenes from their railroad to raise money to maintain the space.
2019 Open Houses are from noon to 5pm on:
Jan 12-13, 26-27
Feb 9-10, 23-24
March 9-10, 23-24
Nov. 9-10, 29-30
Dec. 1, 7-8, 14-15
