Explore: Sorensen Park in Holly Township

Holly, MI- Northwest Oakland County is full of natural places, one of which is Sorensen Park in Holly Township.  This 93-acre gem has a nature center, two softball fields, a playground, and a 5k (3.1 mile) trail that leads over a quaint stream to an amazing expanse of wetlands hugging the Shiawassee River.
Undoubtedly I’ll be back in the spring.  But even on a relatively warm, wet winter’s day the park was a delight to explore.  At one point in the collection of trees, I came upon a wooden bridge in an area where dozens of robins flew among the branches and bathed in the stream. The sounds of wings flapping, water splashing, and birdies chirping made a relaxing stroll even better.
At the furthest point I was in awe when the forest gave way to acres and acres of cattail with the river flowing through it.  In the distance the train tracks ran along the skyline, and my only disappointment (besides not knowing about this place sooner) was that no trains came while I was there.
The nature center was not open, and I have no idea what curiosities might be inside.  But that is a present for another day.
