60 Minutes a Day – Holly Kids Start Healthy Habit with Fuel Up to Play Program
(Holly Area Schools, Dec. 14, 2018)
HOLLY, MI— Holly and Patterson elementary schools students have committed to regular exercise and healthy eating habits through Fuel Up to Play 60, a nationwide wellness initiative focused on student nutrition and physical activity. The program encourages students to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, whether on the playground, in gym class or at home.
“Regular exercise and overall wellness are critical for our students to achieve and succeed before, during and after school,” said Scott Roper, HAS superintendent. “Fuel Up to Play 60 is yet another example of Holly Area Schools providing all students with new and diverse learning opportunities outside the classroom that help them learn, grow and thrive.”
Fuel Up to Play 60 was created by the National Dairy Council and the NFL, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help curb obesity and encourage youth to lead healthier lives.
Holly Elementary kicked off its Fuel Up to Play 60 program with a Fall Fun Run in late October. The district began participating in the program last school year after Fuel Up to Play 60 hosted a field day at Patterson Elementary. The program provided a $6,000 grant that helped fund a rock wall for the Patterson Elementary gymnasium and a Gaga Ball Pit on the school’s playground. Patterson students continue to work on projects encouraging health and wellness at school.
“It’s exciting to see more Holly Area Schools students participating in this program every year as we continue to encourage regular exercise and healthy eating habits as part of a well-rounded, 21st century education,” said Jason McLaughlin, a physical education teacher at Patterson and Holly elementary schools, and Fuel Up to Play 60 student sponsor. “We continue to see more of our students adopt healthy habits that will help them chart a path toward bright and successful futures.”
