Health Department Reports May Give Clue as to Ferndale Tim Horton’s Closure
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Dec. 10, 2018)
Ferndale, MI – The sudden closure of Tim Hortons at 22230 Woodward Avenue last week has caused speculation among neighbors as to why.
Health Department reports obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request show that the restaurant – which houses products from Tim Hortons and Coldstone Creamery – was closed briefly in February due to violations that were quickly corrected.
The only ongoing problem seems to be repairs needed to tile in the back kitchen area, which is listed as a “core” violation.  This was first observed on April 23 with a correct by date of July 22.  And again on Oct. 22 with a correct by date of Jan. 20, 2019.
The health department did not mandate any closure, however they did mandate repairs of the tile.  It is unclear if this is the reason the restaurant closed.  An inquiry to Tim Horton’s media relations department did not get a response.
City Manager April Lynch stated there is no reason that the City of Ferndale knows of for the closure.
In February the list of violations included providing soap dispenses at hand washing sinks, providing a splash shield between the dump sink and the ice cream freezing plate, providing paper towels dispensers at hand washing sinks, adding a reduced pressure zone valve for water supply line to the blender rinsing unit, and sealing the opening between floor tile and drain.
These violations prompted the inspector to determine “this facility is not approved for operation.” The next day there was a new inspection.  Every item was corrected and they were allowed to re-open.
Since that time there have been a few violations including soiled floor drains, storage of single service cups stored on the floor in the dry food storage area, and a soiled ice cream scoop.  Apart from the title damage, violations have been quickly corrected.
Since the closure, the parking lot has been blocked off with orange cones, and there is nothing to indicate any work being done on the building.LL
