Reporter Food: Biscuits and Gravy at Nicky D’s Coney Island
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Dec. 2, 2018)
Royal Oak, MI- Remember that day we got some snow?  Well, thinking that winter was finally upon us I decided to warm my tummy with a hearty breakfast of biscuits and gravy with eggs at Nicky D’s Coney Island at 32657 Woodward Ave.
Until 2016, it had been Athen’s Coney Island. The new owners changed the name to fit in with their other Nicky D’s locations.  Though this one on Woodward Avenue is special.  It’s a retro style diner with a mid-century modern design and décor.  The stainless steel building glimmers like a train car or old fashioned camper, with neon reflecting off its smooth surfaces.  It’s a popular spot all year round, but especially when Dream Cruise comes around.
Their menu is basic diner stuff – coney dogs, burgers, fries, some Greek selections, and of course breakfast.  The biscuits and gravy are pretty much what you’d expect, a mess of thick white gravy drowning three biscuits buried underneath.  I like to just mix my eggs right in, for a not so attractive, but tasty, meal.
Another cool feature is that the entrance way still has a payphone in it.  They don’t, however, seem to have a website. But there is a page on FACEBOOK if folks would like to learn more.
