Explore: Red Oaks Nature Center
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 29, 2018)
Madison Heights, MI – On 13 Mile Road between John R and Dequindre is the Red Oaks Nature Center. This oasis offers just over a mile’s worth of trails through a pretty patch of woods. Along the way one can listen to the calls of many birds and the playful rustling of squirrels chasing each others through the undergrowth and up in the trees. Sometimes there are even deer.
There is also a center that hosts educational events and even birthday parties. This has limited times, but the trails are accessible during the day. For an inside look, check out this Oakland County Times story about an astronomy program held there.
The kiosk welcoming guests gives some good tips for hiking in the woods:
1. Dress in layers 2. Wear proper shoes 3. Follow the adage “Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footsteps.” 4. Bring a camera. Nature is amazing. 5. Explore the trails with a group or let someone know where you will be and when you’ll be back.
Red Oaks Nature Center is located at 30300 Hales Street, Madison Heights. Find more info, including upcoming events, at Oakland County Parks website.
