Reporter Food: Chicken Salad Sandwich at The Lunch Café, Berkley
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 5, 2018)
Berkley, MI – When I was having my first meal ever at The Lunch Café at 3116 Twelve Mile Rd in Downtown Berkley, the women behind the counter randomly started singing along with an upbeat love song. They greeted most of the customers that came in by name, and they went out of their way to get to know me and make sure I was enjoying my lunch, even though they had no idea I was a reporter.
They bounced from table to table, chatting with everyone including the little kids who had come with their parents. The owners, Cindy Coon and her daughter Angela, were behind the counter along with other smiling servers and cooks with a rainbow of uniform shirts they said was unintentional. It was a joke among the crew that they’d all picked different colors for the day.
Between that genuinely friendly attitude and the bright walls covered with hilarious little signs, The Lunch Café was simply full of happy energy and a feeling of community.
On top of it, the food was excellent.
Cindy was pretty excited about her soups, telling me that she’s created over 75 homemade recipes that she switches up daily. On my visit there was a green bean casserole soup made with mushrooms and topped with crispy fried onions.
It was difficult to choose a sandwich because there were many great options, but another customer recommended the chicken salad so I figured I’d give that a try.
The chicken salad comes plain, with the options to add grapes and walnuts, which I did. “Fruited” is the word they use for it. There is also the option to have the bread toasted or un-toasted.
Along with the homemade soup and sandwich, I had the fresh squeezed lemonade with added strawberry flavor.
As you might guess from their name, The Lunch Café is simply a daytime spot, closing at 4pm. Check out their menu at https://www.thelunchcafe.com/
