(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 2, 2018)
Bloomfield Hills, MI – There is something exciting about walking across a lake on a long wooden walkway and looking down into the water and seeing a foot long trout swimming  alongside. On a recent visit to the E. L. Johnson Nature Center in Bloomfield Hills, that was just one of many moments of bliss.
The 40 acre park, located at 3325 Franklin Road, has a variety of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. There are nearly two miles of nature trails, including a trail along a stream, and another around a lake. There’s also a small outdoor amphitheater for classes and meetings, and a visitor center for programming.
The woods and water have plenty of birds, deer, turtles, frogs, muskrats, and fish. But even if visitors don’t see any animals during their walk through the woods, they can see a pair of doe in a pen near the parking lot. The nature center is licensed to care for two, one of whom was famously rescued by neighbors in Pleasant Ridge. Next to the deer pen is a habitat for wild birds.
There are often special activities, including classes and presentations.
