Reporter Food: Cherry Rainbow Smoothie at Detroit Bubble Tea
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 22, 2018)
Ferndale, MI – Bubble Tea is fun.  And Detroit Bubble Tea at 22821 Woodward Avenue does it very well.
Bubble Tea is a sweet flavored drink that comes with little flavored bubbles in the bottom. There are three steps that a guest has to make when creating their own custom Bubble Tea.
First is the flavor of the drink.  There’s a whole list of flavors like banana, chai, coffee, cotton candy, passion fruit, strawberry, and sweet taro.  There are over 30 possible flavors!
The second step is to decide one’s drink type.  There is iced tea, milk tea, smoothie and slushie.
The third step is the “bubbles” There are tapioca pearls which are soft and gooey on the outside, sweet and chewy on the inside.  Popping pearls are a sweet juice pearl that pops with flavor when bitten into.  There are over a dozen flavors of those, including blueberry, green apple, peach and vanilla yogurt.  The last choice is jellies which are pieces of coconut soaked in juice.  Flavors include mango stars, strawberry hearts, coconut, and pineapple.
My choice this visit was the cherry smoothie with rainbow pearls which is a mix of mango, strawberry and coconut.
There are enough combinations possible to have a completely different drink every day for over a year.
Though the bubble tea is the main attraction, there are also cookies and other sweets. Read more about this fun Downtown Ferndale spot at www.detroitbubbletea.com.
