JJs in Madison Heights Expanding with Art Gallery/Bar
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 18, 2018)
Madison Heights, MI – The owners of JJ’s Bar and Grill have come up with a vision of bringing the artistic community together with a new addition to their 26085 John R Rd location.
Every Artist Bar and Gallery will be connected to JJ’s though a double-door, with the classic JJ’s atmosphere on one side, and a haven for artists and musicians on the next.
The bar will operate under JJ’s liquor license.  City Council approved the zoning for the business pending approval by the Zoning Board for a parking variance and an agreement with the city regarding entertainment.
JJ’s has been in business 32 years according to the planning team.  The opening of the space next door timed well with ideas for expansion.
“We want to create an environment where creative minds can gather,” owner Scott Najor said.
The space will include a walking art gallery and a stage for performances. There will be art openings and other community gatherings.
“Artists are the voice of new ideas,” Najor said. “They help us create something that is better than we have now.”
Councilperson Mark Bliss welcomed the expansion, and invited Najor to connect with the City’s Arts Board to collaborate.  “This is an awesome idea,” Bliss said. “It’s a great fit for where our city is heading.  I will be a customer.”
Mayor Brian Hartwell is excited as well.  “You guys are an early adopter of our Downtown Development Plan,” he said.  “11 and John R. is a powder keg for arts and entertainment, and I look forward to working with you in the future.”
