(Royal Oak Police, May 14, 2018)
Royal Oak, MI – A Royal Oak police officer was involved in a fatal on-duty shooting which occurred on Hudson Avenue between McClean and S. Wilson on May 14, 2018. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Cody Reynolds of Royal Oak. This incident began at 3:11 a.m. when Royal Oak police were called to a home in the 1000 block of Hoffman for a domestic assault. The caller told 911 operators that she had been stabbed by her son, she also indicated that Cody struck his father in the head with a guitar.
A Royal Oak Officer encountered Cody walking from the area of the home minutes after the initial call. The officer exited his vehicle and ordered Cody to stop. Cody indicated he had just stabbed his mother and approached the officer. After closing the distance with the officer, Cody very abruptly got on the ground, but then quickly rushed towards the officer in an aggressive manner.
The officer fired at Cody as he was backing up, striking Cody. The officer immediately began to administer first aid as ROFD was responding. Cody was transported to WBH were he was pronounced dead.
Cody’s parents, the victims of the domestic assault, were also taken to WBH for treatment. It appears neither of their injuries are serious. Cody Reynolds is currently on probation for a 2017 conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury.
The investigation is being handled by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office – Special Investigation Unit. In accordance with the Royal Oak Police Department policies and procedures the officer, who was uninjured, will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
