Springtime: Sink or Swim for Local Journalism
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 10, 2018)
Ferndale, MI- Memorial Day kicks off several busy months here in Oakland County. With nearly every city and village bustling with events, lots of great community service happening, the wheels of local government turning, and election season beginning – there is a lot that needs to be covered.
In 2017, Oakland County Times conducted video interviews with 85 candidates, while still growing in under-served communities and increasing readership to over 100,000.
Much of this has happened because of investment in freelance writers. This only happens because of readers who support our work, and the businesses that advertise and sponsor.
We believe Oakland County Times is the answer to many of the problems facing the news media and social media.
We publish stories that matter, in a fair and responsible way. You won’t be bogged down with ads, limited by paywalls, or confused by external third party links. And you won’t be dismayed by hateful or untrue comments that undermine the value of skilled reporting.
Those decisions mean a great experience for readers, but it does mean that we rely on your support to keep the site simple and accessible to everyone.
As the busiest time of year begins, we hope you will consider how much local journalism at Oakland County Times is worth to you.
For readers, there are two great ways to support this work:
To set up a monthly contribution, visit our Patreon site and pledge what you can. Anyone pledging $15 or more will get a Thank You ad on our website.
To make a one-time gift of any amount which goes directly to our freelance budget, visit our GOFUNDME page.
For businesses and groups, we have low-cost sponsorship packages. Check them out on our Advertising page.
And if you are really looking to make a big impact, we are looking for one business that would like to be the naming-rights sponsor of our Candidate Interview series. Contact editor@oc115.com for more information.
Thank you for helping us prove that local journalism is needed and can thrive! We’re looking forward to seeing you as we are out and about doing stories this spring and summer.
