Workbench Fire Fills Troy Home With Smoke

Troy, MI –  The Troy Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the basement at 6403 Tanglewood Wednesday morning.
Caller reported seeing smoke and flames up to the ceiling. Prior to their arrival, Firefighters were told the occupant believed he had extinguished the fire.
All units continued to confirm this report.  First arriving units reported all occupants out of the 2-story, medium-large residential structure.
The occupant met firefighters at the street and reported that there was a fire on his workbench, located in the basement. He also indicated that he believes he put the fire out.
Firefighters entered the smoke-filled structure and made their way to the basement.  Firefighters cooled a small area at the workbench with a pressurized water extinguisher, and used fans to clear residual smoke from the dwelling.
Fire damage was contained to the workbench area, but smoke was visible throughout the home. Damage estimates are not complete at this time.
Cause of the fire is under investigation. The occupants were allowed to stay in the home.
The homeowner was working in the basement, and went upstairs to make a phone call. While on the phone, he was alerted to the fire when a smoke alarm activated on the 2nd floor of the residence. He noticed the smoke, and not finding the source, he proceeded to the basement. Upon finding a fire, he grabbed a pan of water and extinguished the flames.  The homeowner was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. He declined to seek additional treatment at the hospital. There were no other injuries at this incident. 
Everyone is reminded to have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of their home. The smoke alarm should be no older than 10 years. If you’re unsure of the age of the device, replace it. Once installed, devices should be tested weekly. And all occupants should be familiar with an escape plan, including an exterior meeting place.
