Unique Pinecrest Circle Home on the Market in Ferndale

Ferndale, MI – Along Pinecrest just south of 9 Mile is a strange little block where six special houses sit on a crescent with what could almost be considered a garden separating their more secluded “Pinecrest Circle” from the regular Pinecrest Street.
1524 Pinecrest has just been listed for sale, with Derek Werenka of M-1 Realty.
“I think the house is unique because there is nowhere else in Ferndale that has several houses in a row like this. Plus the level of craftsmanship is amazing,” Werekna said.
The homes were built around 1926-1928 to be used as model homes for a builder in the area. In the early years they were occupied by members of the builder’s family, the last of whom passed away in the 1970s.
Homes on the circle have the large curved drive essentially through their front lawns, creating a pocket of grass between the drive and Prinecrest.
The Ferndale Historical Society has a cabinet full of binders with info on each home in the city. According to the Society’s records, “The sunken valley in the front yard was used as a community skating pond.”
Now the area is a well-landscaped garden and community area, with a flagpole marking the center.  There are many trees around the homes, including red maples which help give the are an even more secluded feel.
Neighbor Charlene Faunt also shared some history, stating “Our street was part of the great Indian trail from the banks of the Detroit River to Pontiac. It followed modern day Woodward until 5 mile, shifted west to Livernois then north to 8 mile and west a half mile to Pinecrest. The trail continued thru what became Village of Pleasant Ridge to join Woodward and continue up to Pontiac. The diversion was to avoid a swampy area (hence the name “Ferndale”) between what is now 5 mile and 10 mile roads. It was called “Pinecrest” because of the many pine trees in the area, although the “crest” is actually 100 yards west of our street.”
1524 Pinecrest is a Tudor style brick home with three bedrooms and one and a half baths. The home is brick with wood flooring throughout and a wood burning stove in the living room.
