Man Killed by Fallen Tree During High Winds in Independence Twp.

INCIDENT: 11:57 hrs.May 4, 2018 – Independence Township – Death Investigation / Crushed by Tree – #18- 82733
SUMMARY: Deputies and Independence Township Fire Department responded to the 4700 block of Rattek for a subject trapped beneath a section of a large hardwood tree that broke free and had fallen on top of him. The subject was obviously deceased. A 36 year old male resident of Waterford Twp. was working on his employer’s property using a walk behind skid steer was spreading mulch and leaves to the back of the property when a large section of a tree broke free landing on the victims back. The impact forced his head forward into the steering levers of the machine and pinned him. The levers went into the subjects head contributing to his death. Subject was working for his employer at the time that this accident occurred.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Investigators from Independence Substation and the Medicals Examiner’s Office arrived on scene to take over the investigation. Independence Twp. DPW was requested to assist with the removal of the tree from the victim. The deceased was removed from beneath the section of the tree and turned over to the ME’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for the morning. MIOSHA was contacted and advised regarding the incident.
