Event Description:

Veteran and military historian Dan Heaton will discuss the history of Selfridge Air National Guard Base from World War I’s flying machines to today’s battle-tested 21st century aircraft at the Rochester-Avon Historical Society meeting on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 7 P.M. in the Multipurpose Room at the Rochester Hills Public Library, 500 Olde Towne Rd. Heaton will discuss interesting accounts of the base’s 100-year history, touching upon the Tuskegee Airman, the events of September 11, 2001, and a secret departure of dozens of Selfridge pilots of the eve of World War II.

After serving on active duty in the Air Force, Heaton worked for more than 20 years as a news reporter and editor for both newspapers and radio. He currently is on active duty once again, serving as a public affairs specialist at Selfridge AFB.

He has written three books: Forgotten Aviator: The Bryon Q. Jones Story, Selfridge & Collins: The Life & Times of Military Aviation Pioneers Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge and Capt. Phelps Collins, and Forts & Fields:  A History of Michigan’s Military Places.  A fourth book, Selfridge Field: A Centennial History has been written but not published yet.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required
