Motorcyclist Fleeing Police Dies in Collision

Pontiac,MI – INCIDENT: 18:08 hrs. – City of Pontiac – Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer (#18-74047) / Personal Injury Accident – Fatality (UD-10 Crash Report #18-75048)) / Crash Reconstruction Unit Call-Out (#18-75047)
SUMMARY: A Deputy observed a yellow 2004 Suzuki GSX600 traveling southbound on N. Cass Avenue at a high rate of speed. The Deputy positioned himself behind the motorcycle near N. Johnson Street and Elizabeth Lake Road and he observed that the motorcycle did not have a registration plate attached to it. The Deputy then activated the overhead lights and siren of his fully marked patrol unit to conduct a traffic stop on the motorcycle. The motorcycle turned west onto Elizabeth Lake Road at a high rate of speed and then turned northbound on N. Telegraph Road. The operator of the motorcycle accelerated away from the Deputy and he lost sight of him. The Deputy then terminated the pursuit. The motorcycle was last seen traveling northbound on N. Telegraph Rd from Mall Drive.
Another Deputy who was stopped at the red traffic signal on County Center Drive West, approximately one mile north of where the pursuit was terminated, observed the motorcycle continuing to traveling northbound on N. Telegraph Road at a high rate of speed. After passing through the intersection, the motorcycle drove left of center and struck a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a resident of West Bloomfield.
The driver of the Jeep attempted to turn to the right to avoid the collision, but the motorcycle struck the driver’s side door, ripping it from the vehicle.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: Deputies responded to the scene of the crash. The operator had been thrown from the motorcycle. The Waterford Regional Fire Department and Star EMS responded to the scene. Paramedics from Star EMS transported the rider to McLaren-Oakland Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by an Emergency Room physician. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the 2017 Jeep was not injured and the driver was wearing a safety belt. Alcohol and/or drug use by the operator of the motorcycle is not known at this time. Toxicology results are pending. Deputies from the Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to conduct the crash investigation. The Oakland County Medical’s Examiner’s Office was advised of the fatal crash. An Investigator from the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the hospital. The Medical Examiner’s Office assumed custody of the deceased. An autopsy has been scheduled. The crash remains under investigation.
DRIVER INFORMATION: (Motorcyclist) 36 year old male, resident of the City of Pontiac. He did not have a motorcycle endorsement and his license was suspended.
DRIVER INFORMATION: (Jeep Grand Cherokee) 28 year old female, resident of West Bloomfield Township.
