Hazel Park Soon to See New Sculpture Near City Hall

Hazel Park, MI – In the coming weeks, visitors to Hazel Park’s municipal center could notice a new sculpture. “Movement in Color,” created by Mark Beltchenko, stands at 11 ft tall and features geographic shapes as well as rods of different angles.
Beltchenko is also the artist behind the recent controversy in Royal Oak, where some residents complained that his piece “Composition in Blue” was too close to the War Memorial. Ultimately the City Commission upheld its placement there.
In Hazel Park the sculpture will be situated on the South Plaza at the intersection of imaginary lines from the South City Hall exit the Library sidewalk and the Veteran’s Memorial.
Richard Gage of the Hazel Park Arts Council and owner of Richard Gage Studio is working with the City to install the piece. “We should all appreciate Ed [Klobucher, City Manger] and Andy [LeCureaux, Councilperson] facilitating the continuing effort, and understanding of the value that art brings to the City, and their encouragement to not just me, but all the artists and art forward thinkers in Hazel Park,” Gage said.
The piece, he said, “will provide our residents, City Hall and library visitors with a thoughtful contemplative moment of reflection.”
The sculpture is expected to be installed by mid-April.
Hazel Park has been focusing on public art for the past few years with efforts that include the Hazel Park Art Fair, the Art Walk and the Art Park. They also recently expanded the Courthouse and City Hall.
