Oakland County  Commissioners Approve Funding for Pothole Repairs

Pontiac, Mich. – Michigan winters always take a heavy toll on area roads and this year was no exception, leaving Oakland County drivers facing dangerous and damaging potholes. To address the most urgent road repair needs, the Board of Commissioners (BOC) has authorized $1.5 million in matching funding via their Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP), ensuring a minimum $3 million investment in local roads.
“The ongoing, long-term lack of investment in road infrastructure by the state and federal government continues to take a heavy toll on our roads,” said Board Chairman Michael J. Gingell (R-Lake Orion). “Potholes have been particularly bad this year, contributing to poor road conditions that have a negative impact on regional economic development, driver safety and quality of life for residents. As a result, Oakland County is stepping up in a bipartisan manner to lead the effort to address this serious problem by partnering with local municipalities to invest in urgent road repairs.”
“Fixing our roads must be a priority,” said Commissioner Dave Woodward (D-Royal Oak). “Those in charge in Lansing have failed to fix our roads. Because of their failure, we’re sending more money than ever to help make our local roads safer for all of us.”
The Board’s LRIP program provides financial assistance to Oakland County cities and villages for repairs and improvements on roadways under their jurisdiction. Local municipalities must match funding from Oakland County. Communities receive a share of the available funds based upon a formula consisting of road miles, population and crash data. The program supplements the long-standing Tri-Party Road Improvement Program, which provides a 1/3 share in matching funds for repairs on local roadways under the control of the Road Commission for Oakland County.
