About the FCCB:
The FCCB was founded in 2015 as the result of the efforts made by the Ferndale Arts and Cultural Commission to have a performing ensemble based in the city of Ferndale. Under the direction of Edward Quick, the band has grown to over 80 members and has become one of the finest community bands in the Detroit Area. In addition to five concerts per season, the band has been featured at the Motor City Brass Band Festival of Bands, the Red Cedar Music Festival, the Woodward Dream Cruise, and other local events. One of the unique features of the FCCB are frequent and unusual collaborations with professional musicians. The band has collaborated with Carlos Whitlow and Generation Praise Gospel Choir; Ms. Ava Ordman, Professor of Trombone at Michigan State University; and Musician First Class Joseph D’Aleo, Saxophone, of the US Coast Guard Band. Additionally, they collaborated with the 1st place winner of the prestigious Leonard Falcone Euphonium and Tuba Competition, Mr. Joe Broom. Most recently, they collaborated with up and coming jazz stars, Saxophonist De’Sean Jones and Vibraphonist Chase Jackson with their world renowned band, Knomadik.
Many of its members have been or are band directors and music educators in Detroit Public Schools and other area school districts. Almost one-quarter of the members are alumni from Ferndale High School, 1969 through 2016, and a few are current students of the FHS music program who are considered to be exceptional musicians.
The conductor and several musicians have reached state, national and worldwide acclaim with the students and bands they have taught over the years.
Ed Quick, artistic director and conductor, while director of Detroit School of Arts started the music program and led the band to perform in Carnegie Hall on four separate occasions with a standing invitation to perform.
Victoria Miller, plays flute, retired DPS Band Director from Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School. She and her band had the privilege to perform at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games. Victoria is also a recipient of The Mr. Holland’s Opus Award for 2010 and received the award in Carnegie Hall. A fun fact is she makes the best-smoked turkey legs and rumor has it, nachos. You may purchase her amazing turkey legs and sauce at concerts.
Timothy Brennan, percussionist, tuba and bass player is also the co-founder and director of operations & logistics for the FCCB. He is a retired band director from the Hamtramck School District. He taught at Kosciusko Middle School, Dickinson West and Dickinson East Elementary Schools. In addition, Tim played in the U. S. Army Band for twenty-eight years and conducted the 70th Division Band from 2001 until 2004. He conducted and trained the 156th Army Band Jazz ensemble for four years before retiring from active service in 2014.
The band is supported by donations, grants, advertising and sponsorships. All members and the board of directors are volunteers. Major expenses are music, printing of concert posters and programs, and conductor fees.
Delicious Baked Goods are sold at all concerts, provided by FCCB members!
