Berkley Accepting Applications to Fill Council Vacancy

Berkley, MI –  Berkley residents interested in serving the community have a second opportunity to apply for an open City Council seat.
On Monday, February 5, the council held a thoughtful discussion on establishing an appropriate process to select a qualified resident to fill a City Council term ending in November 2019. This is the second time an appointee will fill a council seat since the 37th City Council convened last November.
Just recently, Ross Gavin was appointed to fill the vacancy created when former councilmember Dan Terbrack was elected mayor.
Following Monday’s discussion, the council decided to emphasize three criteria when evaluating potential City Council candidates: diversity and background; professional experience; and community and municipal involvement.
Mayor Terbrack said the criteria are meant to serve as a general guideline for residents to consider when applying. The process is open to all residents who are registered to vote.
City Council will accept applications for five business days in order to complete its appointment process within 30 days as mandated by City Charter.
Resumes and a Boards & Commission Application must be turned into the City Clerk’s office or emailed to CouncilVacancy@BerkleyMich.net by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.

The City Council will then hold a special meeting to extend an opportunity to five applicants to publicly introduce themselves and explain their interest in serving Berkley as a member of City Council. If more than five applications are received, a subcommittee of the Mayor Pro Tem and two council members will meet in open session to review and score the applicants based on their diversity & background, professional experience, and community and municipal involvement.
For residents, this is a key opportunity to play a critical role in serving their community. City Council will make the appointment at the March 5, 2018 regular meeting and the newest member of City Council will be officially seated at the following meeting.
