Berkley Councilperson Kideckel Resigns After Fleeing Accident

Berkley, MI – On Monday, January 29, Alan H. Kideckel submitted his resignation from the Berkley City Council in writing to the City Clerk.
Per Section 3.5 of the City Charter, the letter shall be acted upon by the council at its next regular meeting, currently scheduled for Monday, February 5.
Per his letter (attached below), Mr. Kideckel feels his continued presence as a member of the City Council will be a distraction that could prevent our City from moving forward in a positive direction. Mr. Kideckel’s resignation is effective immediately, and City Council will have 30 days to fill the vacancy.
In his resignation letter, Kideckel wrote:
I have proudly volunteered and served the City of Berkley for over 25 years in many different capacities. I’ve always considered the Berkley community as my family. On January 1, 2018, I was involved in an automobile accident and received a misdemeanor ticket.
My sincere and heartfelt apology is extended to the people in the other vehicle and anyone else who I affected. Due to the pending Court proceedings, I am unable to comment any further on the facts at this time.
I have always done what is best for the City of Berkley. I feel that my continued presence as a member of City Council will distract our City from moving forward in a positive direction. Effectively immediately, I hereby tender my resignation from the Berkley City Council. I am thankful to the residents for the opportunity to serve and for their continued support. I look forward to helping and contributing to the City of Berkley as a private citizen, in healthy and positive ways.
A previous press release (Jan. 27, 2018) stated:
In the early hours of January 1, 2018, Berkley Public Safety Officers responded to a reported vehicle accident that occurred in the area of Oakshire and Beverly, south of 12 Mile. It was reported that one of the drivers left the scene. Following an investigation of the accident, Public Safety Officers determined that Berkley City Councilman Alan H. Kideckel was at fault and had in fact left the scene.
Later the same morning, Mr. Kideckel came to the Public Safety Department to file an accident report. Mr. Kideckel has been cited with failing to yield to a traffic control device and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Berkley Public Safety treated this matter as it would with any driver, and prepared a comprehensive report.
Mr. Kideckel was elected to the City Council in November 2011. Because Mr. Kideckel is a publicly elected official in Berkley, the City Attorney referred the prosecution of these citations to Royal Oak. This immediate decision ensured there was no favorable treatment (nor appearance thereof) by the criminal justice system.
At this time, the criminal justice process is ongoing and no final rulings have been made. Any further inquiries in this matter should be directed to Mr. Kideckel.
