Birmingham Hires Tiffany Gunter as Assistant City Manager
(City of Berkley, Jan. 6, 2018)
BIRMINGHAM, MI – The City of Birmingham, Michigan is pleased to announce the hiring of Tiffany Gunter as the City’s new Assistant City Manager.
Gunter assumed her new role as of January 2, 2018.
“We are excited to bring Tiffany’s leadership abilities, judgment and strong record of regional collaboration to our team,” said Joe Valentine, Birmingham City Manager. “Whether leading projects or aligning stakeholders, Tiffany’s experience and skills are a valuable resource in the work we do on behalf of the residents and businesses that make Birmingham their home.”
Gunter’s passion for public service work is evident. Prior to her appointment as Interim CEO of the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA) in March 2017, Gunter served the agency in a number of leadership roles that included: preparing budgets, acting as public spokesperson, CFO, IT Director, project manager and grant writer. She was lauded by RTA leaders for her political savvy and relationship building skills within metro Detroit’s often fractured political power structure. “Birmingham is a great community and I am looking forward to using my expertise, energy and creativity on behalf of the citizens, merchants and stakeholders of the city,” Gunter said.
Gunter’s other public service work includes serving as Executive Dean at Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) in 2014. She served as Deputy Project Manager of Transportation for 10 years (2004-2014) for the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). Her rich work experience, however, is not limited to service in the public sector.
Gunter worked as a Material Cost Manager for Daimler-Chrysler as well as working for three years as an Inventory Manager at Kmart Corp. before moving into public service work.
Throughout much of her career, Gunter has sharpened her leadership skills through training and certification. She recently obtained an Executive Leadership certificate from the University of Notre Dame and also successfully completed the Kouzes and Posner Leadership Challenge Training Certificate in 2017.
Gunter earned her BBA (Bachelors) in General Management and Finance from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She continued her education at U of M-Dearborn, earning her MPA (Masters) in Public Administration.
Gunter is also a mother to her five-year old son, Ryan. Her other interests include exercise, biking and running.  She also enjoys traveling and cooking.
