Jewish Ferndale Celebrates Hanukkah with Menorah Lighting

Ferndale, MI – A celebration of light and faith was shared with the community Monday at Jewish Ferndale hosted their annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony in honor of Hanukkah.

Rabbi Herscel Finman and his wife Chana run the organization, which offers a community center for classes and gatherings.

The Rabbi said the holiday is a celebration of a jug of oil lasting 8 days instead of one and lighting a candle for each day.

In addition to lighting the 13 foot electric menorah on the lawn, there were musical performances, refreshments, and a fire performer. David Brown of Kibbutz Detropia awed the crowd with his twirling flames. He said that fire is traditionally used for Menorahs because it brings light to the darkest part of the year.

Jewish Ferndale recently moved into their home at 1725 Pinecrest, which used to be a dentist office. The location gives great visibility for the Menorah and for their group. Prior to this, the Menorah had been lit and displayed at the Kulick Community Center.

The event showed closeness in the community, with a lot of smiles and respect for the Hanukkah traditions.
