Berkley Seeing Applicants for City Council Vacancy

Berkley, MI – On November 7, 2017, Berkley voters elected Daniel Terbrack as their new mayor.

When he assumed the duties of his new office, Mayor Terbrack vacated his previous seat as a City Council member, creating a vacancy for his unexpired council term. This is the third time, since 2011, that either an election or resignation created a council vacancy in Berkley.

“This is an opportunity for a registered voter to be appointed to serve the community along with the elected members of City Council” said Matt Baumgarten, Berkley City Manager. The appointment process was announced on November 20th, during the first meeting of the 37th City Council.

“It’s been an honor to serve on the City Council and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the residents as Mayor,” said Mayor Terbrack, “We will now move forward and select a qualified candidate after a thorough process.

I know our City is full of incredibly passionate and talented people who would serve our community well as a member of Council.”

According to the City Charter, council members are required to appoint an individual to fill the vacancy within thirty days. To be considered, interested residents are encouraged to submit a resume and a completed Board and Commission Application to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 PM on Thursday, November 30, 2017. Applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee composed of council members.

Finalists will be invited to the December 4, 2017 council meeting to introduce themselves and briefly describe how they can best serve Berkley residents.

During the December 18th council meeting, the entire City Council will consider each finalist, nominate and vote for the individual who will fill the vacancy. The newly appointed council member will serve a two year term beginning in January

If there is a desire to continue serving as a council member, the appointee will be required to run for office when the term ends in November 2019.
