Karen Twomey Resigns from Ferndale School Board

(Ferndale Schools, Oct. 23, 2017)

Ferndale, MI – Ferndale Schools Board of Education Secretary Ms. Karen Twomey has announced she will resign from her position on the Board effective November 21st, 2017.

In her letter of resignation Ms. Twomey stated:

“I joined the Board in 2008 in order to serve a district thick with tension and a deep desire for change. Since then we have seen our district blossom due to the noble changes championed by our community. This change in direction led to the creation of a strategic plan that has guided our efforts as a Board to this day. Together with our community and Administrative team, the Board of Education has been guided by our strategic plan and implemented an elementary restructuring, stabilized our finances, and significantly strengthened our academics. I am proud to have been a part of this revitalization of our Schools.

Earlier this year our Board had another vacancy. During the process to select a new trustee I saw eight amazing community members come forward to serve. I know that there are many others in our great community that are ready to take my place and I will be leaving the Board in highly capable hands. I plan on staying active within our district and will now focus on other areas of need; diversity, equity and inclusion, my own children and their schools. I am loyal to our beautiful Eagles and will continue to serve our district wherever there is a calling.”

Ferndale Schools Board of Education President Jennifer LaTosch said, “Karen Twomey has been a staunch advocate for our Ferndale students throughout her years of service on the Ferndale Public Schools Board of Education. Karen has helped steer our district through many transitions, while always maintaining focus on academic excellence for all students. Karen’s work on state-wide initiatives and keeping the pulse of legislative changes has helped us not only survive, but thrive in challenging times. I look forward to continuing to work with Karen in other ways to support our community, district, and school family. We wish her nothing but the best and thank her for her tremendous amount of work and dedication over her many years of service.”

Ferndale Schools Superintendent Dania Bazzi said, “It has been a pleasure and honor working alongside Karen Twomey. During her tenure, Karen has dedicated her time and wisdom to this district. Most importantly she made difficult decisions that squarely focused on what’s best for students.  Karen, we thank you for your selfless service and steadfast commitment to raising the achievement of ALL students at Ferndale Public Schools.”

In the coming weeks the Ferndale Schools Board of Education will announce the timetable to replace Ms. Twomey. Please visit http://www.ferndaleschools.org/district/board/join/ for more details on the position.
