2017 Candidate Interview: Malkia Newman for Pontiac Library Board

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 13, 2017)

Pontiac, MI – Malkia Newman is one of ten people running for six seats on the Pontiac Library Board. Also on the Nov. 7, 2017 ballot are Aleda J. Brisbon, Vernita L. Duvall, Perry Earl Jr, Janiece Gage, Mattie McKinney Hatchett, Kiesha Jones, Rosie Lance-Richardson, Holbert Maxey, and Melanie Sharee Rutherford.

Newman is a Community Education and Team Supervisor for Community Network Services Anti-Stigma Program.  She’s served on several boards and commissions including Oakland County Mental Health Advisory Board where she was both Vice Chair and Chair, the North Oakland NAACP and the Pontiac Housing Commission.

“I believe that we need responsible people in responsible positions. I’m not saying that the others who are running or those who have served are not responsible.  But I know myself well enough to know that it takes more than just name recognition.  It takes more than knowing people.  Once you get into those positions you find out the inner workings, the budgets, all the day to day things that are boring. Some people get bored and they disappear.  I’m not that person because I’ve done that work for many many years,” Newman said.
