2017 Candidate Interview:  Kumar Giri for Troy City  Council

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 20, 2017)

Troy, MI – Kumar Giri is one of seven people running for three seats on the Troy City Council.  Also on the Nov. 7, 2017 ballot are Mark Gunn, David Hamilton, Ellen Hodorek, Paul McCown, Edward Pennington and Sunil Sivaraman.

Giri works with his family in the medical device business as well as owns an drug and alcohol testing and treatment facility.  He moved to Troy four years ago.

He spoke about protecting green space and the proposed Troy Civic Center project.  When asked about other issues he said “It sounds kind of contradictory to the green space, but I also want to develop the business. There’s a way to develop business. I’m at 35 now, so I’ve been in business about 15 years. Multiple different businesses. And there are ways to develop the city without hurting the green space. So I do want some investment. We have the Big Beaver Corridor which looks amazing. I mean, if you’ve seen the latest developments in the last three years, or four years, it’s just spectacular. The whole area is booming. There’s a lot of restaurants going in. We can maybe focus on that area. Maybe get some more of the high-rise condos they want to put in the Civic Center, put it right on Big Beaver. Yeah, maybe it’s a traffic issue, but I would prefer that over destroying green space you have.”
