Holly Day Celebrates Community Spirit

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 18, 2017)

Holly, MI – Sunshine filled the sky and smiles filled the faces of people in Holly on Saturday as the community came together to celebrate HollyDay.  The event was a spin-off of the formerly thriving Carry Nation Festival and the Village’s sesquicentennial in 2015.

The day began with a parade along Maple and Saginaw Streets that had over 38 groups, businesses, and other entries. And of course the Holly Bronchos Marching Band treated observers to some songs and the lights and sirens of several fire departments closed the procession.  Favorites included the beautiful butterflies of the forthcoming Blumz floral shop, characters from the Holly Dickens Festival, and an appearance by the historic heroine Carry Nation.

Missing from the parade were elected officials of the Village Council. Instead of shaking hands and kissing babies, several were seen back at Saginaw Street directing traffic, assisting with the sound stage and helping set up the free hot dog stand.  Later in the evening each took turn in the dunk tank.

The day continued with sidewalk sales, performances, games for the kids, and a fireworks show after sunset.
