Former Madison Heights Mayor Ed Swanson Dead at 87

Madison Heights, MI – It is with deep regret, sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of former Mayor Edward Swanson at the age of 87.

Edward C. Swanson was first elected as the Mayor of the City of Madison Heights on November 8, 1999 and continued to serve as the second longest serving Mayor in the City’s history, serving in this capacity for 16 years from November 8, 1999 to November 9, 2015.

“Ed will be greatly missed. He was truly committed to the City, evidenced by the countless contributions and the legacy he built here”, said Mayor Brian Hartwell.

Ed worked tirelessly for the betterment of the City’s economic, cultural and quality of life issues, including his support of the library. Ed and his wife Elaine spearheaded the fundraising efforts to maintain the City’s Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Nature Center’s Fall Festival, as well as sponsored both these events, ensuring the continuation of these cherished City activities. We honor his legacy and extend our deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time. May the memory of his life be a comfort and a blessing to all who knew and had the privilege of working with him.”

City building flags will be flown at half-staff in honor and remembrance of Mayor Swanson.

Visitation will be held at Edward Swanson & Son Funeral Home, 30351 Dequindre Madison Heights, Michigan 48071 on Thursday September 14th, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Friday September 15th, 2017 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. with funeral services on Saturday September 16th, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at Edward Swanson & Son Funeral Home.
