2017 Candidate Interview: Farmington Mayor Bill Galvin

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 11, 2017)

Farmington, MI – Farmington Mayor Bill Galvin is running for re-election to the City Council.  In Farmington all candidates run as Council members and then the Mayor is selected by Council at the beginning of the term.  There are five candidates for three seats.  Also on the Nov. 7, 2017 ballot are: Greg Cowley, Joe LaRussa, Jeff Scott and Maria Taylor.

Mayor Galvin was appointed to Council in 2011 to serve a partial term and has was re-elected in 2013, at which time he was also selected to be Mayor.  He has a background in financial services.

“My platform has three high level bullet points,” Galvin said.  “First is to grow our tax base.  And that mean we need to continue supporting economic development, economic redevelopment, where it’s going to be best suited and by doing that we will have more square footage that we can tax in Farmington without have to necessarily raise property taxes… Infrastructure, that’s the second bullet.  Invest in infrastructure. We have some streets that are in need of great repairs and underneath those streets we have a water system and sewers that also need repairs…City Hall, look at different forms of technology, where there’s a possibility to improve or maintain or increase efficiencies of the delivery of services.  One of the biggest concerns of Downtown Farmington is public parking… The Third Level… is maintaining a high level of services – public safety department, 24 hour snow removal, curbside leaf pick up… there are going to take technology and financial and long term solutions.”
