Southfield A & T’s  Offensive Line Gets Haircuts & Life Advice from Detroit Barbers
(Sam Gurwin, Aug. 28, 2017)
Southfield and Ferndale, MI – One of the Best Football Programs I have heard of is brewing at Southfield Arts & Technology High School. And I came by the knowledge from a unique but not unknown source. A local hip Barbershop.
TACKLING CHARITY
Coach Tim Conley of Southfield’s A&T Team has been getting services at the DETROIT BARBERS for a couple of years, both at their Cork Town location and their Ferndale one.
Over this time he struck up a friendship with Co-Owner Chad Buchanan. The pair had Football in common- Chad a Former College Player and Coach Tim in charge of the Warriors at Southfield A&T. This is a sports match made in heaven when the idea of giving back to the community via Chad was possible in the form of Free Haircuts to Coach Tim’s unsung heroes and “Heart of the Team” the Football Team Offensive Line (OL).
This up-and-coming Program in Southfield has a new OL Coach- He is training the team at the College level. The results are working.
UNSUNG HEROES Yes, the Quarterbacks and Ends get all the limelight but the backbone or “Heart of the Team” says Coach Tim deserve recognition. With 2 guys from the OL going to the Pros last year to another 2 this year being scouted- something is going right for Southfield A&T.
All of the Lineman mentioned wanting to go to the pros; a few mentioned always having a backup plan. Balance seemed paramount. What resounded with all of the interviews with the OL was the strength and character of the members, polite and always looking one in the eyes.
The barbers also gave some advice to the players under their sheers.
BUILDING A SQUAD & FAMILY
The growing success of the Southfield A&T program has caused kids to want to be on the team from other districts says Coach Tim. A “light” of success shines not only on the field but behind the scenes. Some teens with a lack of parental and sibling support enjoy the feeling of family given by the team.
Coach Tim, Chad and several players mentioned talked about the attributes that come from being an OL Player:  Discipline, Organization, Leadership Training, and Fun
THE PASSING OF TROPHY KNOWLEDGE
Chad handled his Football Career as his successful business. His employees are commissioned instead of renting space like most Hairstylist. A Charitable and Cheerful Man, Chad believes in family and practice. One needs to work and maintain their skill level…the young men need to maintain their athletic level while waiting for their chance at the pros or college ball.
He and coach Tim mentioned never giving up and care about the future of the Football Players. Chad seems to handle his Employees the same way – teamwork in motion.
THE WINNING WALK OFF THE FIELD
Seemly a Family already, the players had conversation among themselves, between and after the Haircuts- laughter, asking about tutoring, and all the small relationships seen in any healthy team. A model for the area, these young men get the benefits of a possible pro career good role models like Coach Tim and the team at Detroit Barber’s.
