2017 Candidate Interview: Royal Oak Commissioner Sharlan Douglas
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 26, 2017)
Royal Oak, MI – Sharlan Douglas is running for re-election to the Royal Oak City Commission in the Nov. 7, 2017 election. She will be on the ballot with incumbent David Poulton and challengers Kim Gibbs, Richard Karlowski, and Melanie Macey.
Douglas has lived in Royal Oak for 25 years. She owns Douglas Communications Group, a Royal Oak public relations and social marketing firm. She is the former President of the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce and the founding Executive Director of the Eight Mile Voulevard Association, as well as many Royal Oak based activities including service on the Planning Commission, Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and the Board of Directors for Royal Oak Youth Assistance. She has been a Commissioner since 2013.
She also has a passion for Stagecrafters. “I’m a lifetime member of Stagecrafters, where I’ve performed roles on stage and as a director. But more significant really in a management or administrative role I’ve served on the Board of Directors for a number of years. I’ve been an officer in the organization. I’m currently chair of the nominating committee and I see the economic impact that Stagecrafters has on our city. Stagecrafters brings 20,000 people to Downtown Royal Oak every year. And 75% of those people either drink or dine before or after the show. So I’m really proud to be part of an organization that plays such an important role in Downtown Royal Oak.” She also talked about Royal Oak’s successes and developments such as the Civic Center project.
