2017 Candidate Interview: Aaron Flanigan for Madison Heights City Council

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Aug. 20, 2017)

Madison Heights, MI – Aaron Flanigan of Madison Heights is one of eight candidates running for three seats on the Madison Heights City Council. Also on the ballot are Mark Bliss, Ronald Butcher, Johnnette P. Eggert, Roslyn Grafstein, Mark L. Kimble, Emily Rohrbach and David M. Soltis.

Flanigan has lived in Madison Heights since 2010 and his wife has lived in the city since 2005.  Professionally he has a law degree and works as a Judicial Clerk in Oakland County working for Chief Judge Nanci Grant.

“For a while I was somebody who was content about the way the city was.  I didn’t have a motivation to want to do more.  I think I’ve seen, as I mentioned at the start, blight in the neighborhood.  There specifically is a basketball net at Wildwood Park that’s been broke over three years.  And before it completely broke, it was without a back board and I’d drive by and the kids were still playing on the rim without the backboard until the rim eventually collapsed forward.  I remember is was the first time I was truly motivated to actually call the city and to want to say something.  And when I called the Parks Dept I was a little taken aback by how matter of fact they were about it.  They knew it was broken. And they said they weren’t fixing it.  And I was a little surprised by it.  That along with some of the things I’ve seen have inspired me to want to be more involved,” Flanigan said.
