Butterfly Parade Flutters Through Red Oaks in Madison Heights

(Crystal A. Proxmire, July 20, 2017)

Madison Heights, MI – The O’Donnell Family came all the way from Lyon Township to enjoy the Butterfly Parade at Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights Saturday.  Seven year old Brendan, five year old Jerdan and three year old Liam donned cardboard butterfly wings and special t shirts to walk with about 50 other butterflies through the woods.

Their parents Kim and Mike love taking them on adventures throughout SE Michigan, and the Butterfly Parade is one of their favorites.  “It encourages them to be excited about nature,” Kim said.  “And it’s free.  They get to do all this crafty stuff. It’s good for them.  We do a lot of things at different libraries, and Oakland County Parks.  It just helps them get out and see the world.

Maria Judge of Ferndale came with six year old Serenity and two year old Gabriel.  “We cane last year and it’s superawesome,” Judge said.  “I really like these butterfly feeders.  They’re shaped like flower and you fill them with sugar water and put outside and that feeds the butterflies.”

In addition to the parade itself, kids had time to play games, munch snow cones and explore a tent full of freshly hatched monarch butterflies.
