Hazel Park, MI – The Hazel Park community came together Saturday for a ribbon-cutting at the new Legacy Fitness Park inside Green Acres park on the city’s NW side.

Former Hazel Park Councilperson Cindy Hutchinson spearheaded the effort to have a fitness park in honor of her parents Richard and Lorraine Truba.  “The Trubas have been part of Hazel Park probably a long has Hazel Park’s been Hazel Park,” said Mayor Jeffrey Keeton.  “If there was ever anything in Hazel Park that was like a general store with a cracker barrel that people came and set around, it was Trubor Carpet.  Many world problems were solved in that place.”

The City of Hazel Park provided installation of the project which includes a dedication sign and multiple pieces of fitness equipment similar to those found in a gym. There’s also a bike repair station. Hutchinson, The Hazel Park Lions Club, The Ferndale Elks and others helped raise nearly $40,000 to fund the park.

Hutchinson explained the name choice.  “I went to bed and woke up one morning and I thought, ‘oh this is Legacy Park,” she said.  “It just came to me, and I’m thinking that this was such a community effort to put this park in, and my parents were so community oriented. They gave to this community, they received back, they loved their community and I believe that’s their legacy – just loving a place and being involved in it.”

Legacy Park is located in Green Acres Park, 620 W Woodward Heights Blvd, Hazel Park, MI 48030.
