Royal Oak, MI – Cleanup continues on I-696 W just before Woodward Avenue after a tanker truck and two passenger vehicles that ended with explosions and fire.
Firefighters on the scene said there were no fatalities. One witness said he heard the crash and stopped on the overpass to watch as two women crawled through the sunroof of what appears to be a Dodge Durango that had been pinned between the tanker truck and the wall. Black marks show where the vehicle hit the median wall and was dragged about 75 ft before it stopped. The witness said the women, plus the driver of the sedan and the driver of the semi all ran to safety before the semi’s tires started to explode. Finally the tank itself blew.
The expressway was closed for about two hours beginning around 2pm. Royal Oak firefighters extinguished the fire while State Police, Pleasant Ridge and Ferndale Police assisted with traffic control.
